" I AM the Light of the World"
Passage: John 8:12–8:12, John 1:4–1:5, Isaiah 9:2–9:2
Light is a rich Old Testament symbol. Those who were with Jesus when he said to the crowd, “I am the light of the world”, would have understood the deep significance of that claim. The promised messiah in Isaiah 9 was compared to a great light, a light seen by those walking in darkness. To the religious leaders of the day the implication of Jesus’ claim was - like many of Jesus’ teachings-a scandalous outrage! What are the implications for us in current times, if Jesus is the light of the world? How should our lives reflect that light?
